Before Albert Einstein came up with his equation E=mc^2, the scientific world believed that mass and energy were two independent phenomena in the universe. However certain occurrences, such as radioactive emissions could not be explained by this divide between mass and energy.
Listen online by selecting Play All or choose Albert Einstein published his Special Theory of Relativity in 1905 and in doing so demonstrated that mass and energy are actually the same thing, with one a tightly compressed manifestation of the other. This mass-energy equivalence has had a major impact on all our lives, although how and why isn't always obvious. It has been more than a century ago that Albert Einstein arrived at his immortal equation E=mc2. It can rightly be said that modern physics started with Albert Einstein whose legacy will stay with us for a long time to come.

In mid 1905, Albert Einstein derived what is now the most famous equation in the world-- E equals mc squared. But he didn't just write this down out of the blue. It followed directly from his paper on special relativity that we talked about in last week's video, and here's how he did it.

He is generally considered the most influential physicist of the 20th century for developing the special and general theory of relativity in addition to writing down the most famous equation in the world, E=MC^2. Einstein concluded that the emission reduces the body's mass by E / c 2, and that the mass of a body is a measure of its energy content.
